Do you get frustrated with having curly or wavy hair? Is it dry and frizzy and never seems to look like the perfect hair you see on TV? There are so many women out there that use damaging heat to straighten their beautiful curls because they don’t like how their hair is naturally. I used to be the same way. I used to hate having curly hair because it would be so frizzy and stringy and have weird random ringlets everywhere. Straightening my hair was the only way I would wear it which totally damaged it. I never appreciated the natural curly hair that I was born with until I was introduced to products that were appropriate for curly hair. I used to go to the drugstore and buy the products which were ‘supposed’ to be nourishing and moisturizing for curly hair, only to realize that my hair was just as frizzy and dry than it was before using the product.  It wasn’t until a friend of mine who is a hairdresser told me about DevaCurl, a specific hair product company that caters specifically to curly haired girls (and boys). Taking care of your curly hair actually has a name and is called the Curly Hair Method. I decided to take the leap and spend the money to try it and I’ve never looked back!

What is the Curly Hair Method?

The Curly Hair Method was the conception of Lorainne Massey who is the creator of the DevaCurl product line and who penned the infamous reference book on curly hair “Curly Girl: The Handbook”. In a nutshell, the Curly Hair Method is the elimination of anything that may be harmful to your naturally curly hair. Taking away heat, silicones, sulphates, parabens, even brushing your hair. If you’ve ever heard of the ‘no-poo’ hair care method, that is also part of it. (No-poo method discourages the use of shampoo that lathers and instead, used a mild cleanser that does not strip away any of the natural oils that your curls need to survive.) There are specific steps that need to be followed in order to ensure this method works for you properly, but I assure you (and I can’t say this enough) it’s WORTH IT! I’ve noted the steps for each product below.

It may seem like taking care of your curly hair properly using this method is a lot of work but honestly, if you think about it, you are probably spending just as much time straightening your hair on top of damaging it than if you took care of your curly hair properly.

Best Products to Get Your Best Curls

Shampoo: DevaCurl Low-Poo Original Mild Lather Cleanser

DevaCurl has a bunch of different types of ‘no-poo’ cleansing products. There are ones for wavy hair (Delight), curly hair (Original), and super curly hair (Decadence). These products are cleansers which don’t have any shampoo in them. In other words, they don’t lather like a normal shampoo but they do still clean your hair. It may seem really weird at first because you are washing your hair and there are no suds but I promise you, your hair is getting cleaned! If you have curly hair then the No-Poo Original Cleanser may be better for you, but I like the Low-Poo Original Cleanser (recommended for wavy/curly hair) because my hair is on the thinner side and I have found through experience that the No-Poo Cleanser weighs my curls down reducing the volume. With this product all you have to do is put a little bit in your hands and then massage onto your scalp. Don’t worry about getting the ends of your hair because just rinsing it out will be enough. Rinse out your hair by massaging your scalp. Make sure to get all of the cleanser out because if you don’t there may be a residue left behind which may flake and look like dandruff. I had this issue until I realized I wasn’t doing a good enough job of getting all of the cleanser out and once I did, the problem went away! **Be sure to visit the DevaCurl website to see which cleanser is best for your curls.

CONDITIONER: DevaCurl One Condition Original

The next and most important step is conditioning your hair. I’ve learnt through research that curly hair lacks more of the natural oils that straight hair has thus resulting in frizziness and undefined curls. It is very important to condition your hair. I use so much of the One Condition Original conditioner that I invested in the larger size which is a 32oz pump bottle. I pump about 9 times until I have a handful of conditioner and then I only apply it to my hair from the top of my ears down. I run my fingers through my hair to separate the curls and make sure the conditioner is getting all over the bottom of my hair. This should be the only form of brushing you should do with your curly hair. Like me you may find that some of your hair comes out when you do this and this is normal. If you were to brush your hair you’d find the same result but the hair would be in your brush. It just seems like, at least to me, it’s a lot more hair coming out because it’s actually in your hands but I assure you it’s not. Now, this part is VERY important. When rinsing out the conditioner, use COLD WATER. Yes, you heard me. The cold water closes the cuticles which will result in your curls being shiny and less frizzy for a longer period of time. Also, comb your hair with your fingers when rinsing out the conditioner just how you applied it.

PRODUCTS

To ensure the best results with the products below, you need to make sure your hair is SOAKING wet. After using these products, once your hair is dry, it may feel crunchy. All you have to do is scrunch your hair and the crunchiness magically disappears and soft, bouncy, voluminous curls or waves are there!

Step One: B’Leave In Miracle Curl Plumper

This is my leave-in conditioner. After I rinse out my conditioner I make sure my hair is still soaking wet and then I take about a quarter-sized amount and apply it just like I did with the conditioner. I have found that this product helps in reducing any frizz I may have when my hair dries.

Step Two: Ultra Defining Gel

I know what you’re thinking. Gel dries crispy and crunchy. Actually, this gel does as well, but then magic happens and the crunch goes away! Making sure your hair is still soaking wet I use a quarter-sized amount of the Ultra Defining Gel in my palms, and sandwich my hair in between my hands. I then run my hands down the length of my hair from the top of my ear to the ends. I then run my fingers through my hair and then scrunch. If you don’t hear a squishing sound when you scrunch your hair your hair isn’t wet enough! It may seem weird but these products work best if your hair is soaking wet. I promise you, the end result is amazing!

Step Three: Frizz Free Volumizing Foam

I use this product like mousse. I pump the Frizz Free Volumizing Foam about 3 times into my hands and then scrunch my curls. Because my hair is on the finer side, even though it’s curly, I find that my hair has more volume when I use this product.

Step Four: DevaTowel

Honestly, you don’t necessarily have to get the towel from DevaCurl themselves, but drying your hair with a 100% microfibre towel is the most important part. Using a terrycloth towel will ensure you will have frizzy hair when it dries. I take the DevaTowel and scrunch the excess water out to help my hair dry faster.

TREATMENTS

Every so often I throw in a DevaCurl treatment product to pamper my hair a little. I use these products very rarely and sparingly so they last forever.

Buildup Buster Micellar Water Cleansing Serum

If I feel like my hair isn’t as curly, shiny, voluminous etc. as it was before, I use Buildup Buster to get rid of some of the build-up of product I may have. I literally only have to use this product at the most once a month. Before cleansing, I put this directly on my scalp as it has a pointed nozzle perfect for this kind of application. I massage it into my scalp and then rinse it out, again, by massaging. I then go on to my normal hair routine. Please note that if you use this treatment you do NOT have to use the cleanser because this already cleanses your hair. You can skip right to the conditioner.

Melt Into Moisture Matcha Green Tea Butter Mask

Sometimes my hair can get (and feel) very dry. When my hair gets this way I like to use this mask to rehydrate my curls and get them feeling silky smooth again. First I cleanse my hair. Then I apply this mask in my wet hair like I would the conditioner but I put it throughout my whole head, not just the bottom half. I leave it on for 3 minutes if I’m short on time, or I leave it in for as long as 15-20 minutes. You can even apply it and leave it on overnight! I then rinse it out and then continue my hair care routine as usual. DevaCurl says that you can use this once a week, but I find that I only use it as needed.

Common Questions About Curly Hair

What is good for curly hair that is very frizzy?

The best products for frizzy hair is anything that does not have ANY sulphates in it. The most common ingredient in everyday hair care products is sodium lauryl sulphate which is a salt and detergent and dries out your hair causing it to frizz. Look for products that don’t have any sulphate ingredients in it!

DevaCurl products are all sulphate, parabin and silicone free so you know it’s specifically made for your type of hair. DevaCurl products can be a bit on the pricier side for hair products (but worth every penny!) so, if you are looking for something that you can get at the drugstore I would recommend the Marc Anthony Strictly Curls sulphate free hair care line. I had a decent experience with this product line before switching to DevaCurl products.

How do I sleep on my curly hair and still have it look great in the morning?

The best way to sleep with your curly hair is to put it into a loose ponytail or bun on the top of your head. To reduce frizz it’s recommended to sleep on a silk pillowcase or with a sleeping cap.

A trick I use to refresh my curls in the morning is to take a spray bottle and put a few pumps of conditioner in it. I then fill it with water and give it a shake. Spray your hair until its damp and then scrunch. This will refresh your curls after a good nights sleep without having to fully wash or condition your hair!

What can I use if I don’t have a microfibre towel handy?

If you don’t have access to a microfibre towel then a cotton t-shirt will do. As long as it’s not a terrycloth towel! Like microfibre, cotton will also reduce frizz when your hair dries.

Is it good to wash my curly hair every day?

No! Curly hair lacks natural oils that straight hair has which is why it is drier and can frizz more easily. It is best to wash your hair maximum 2-3 times a week. I personally wash my hair 2 times a week. This does NOT mean I only shower twice a week. In between my hair washes I only use conditioner when I shower, re-hydrating my hair.

  1. My hair is straight as a stick, but I have some friends with very curly hair. They will enjoy this post and the products.

I found this leave-in condition to make such a difference with my hair. If I find that my hair is a bit frizzy when it’s dry, I take a little bit of the B’Leavin and put in on and that solves the problem!

  2. Hey, I’m a curly girl too and been following the Curly Girl method over a year now. My curls are in great shape now but still battling the frizz. Will check out those Mark Anthony products, cheers

Sometimes I find that my hair is a bit frizzy too when it’s completely dry, especially if there is any humidity in the air. When this happens I either put a little bit of the B’Leavein Miracle leave-in conditioner on (put a little in my palms and put on like the I did the Ultra Defining Gel but without scrunching) OR I sometimes use the SuperCream the same way I would the Ultra Defining Gel and scrunch. That usually helps with the frizz. I hope that helps!
